I recall in 1982 when they did various open air shows in locations in Leicester city centre to promote their great 'Rodeo' single on Warner Brothers, I saw them in the big open area between the two display windows at the old Ainleys record shop then across the road at the Clock Tower. They had their saxes and battery powered amps and two battery powered silver Roland boxes, one was drums, the other did basslines - technological busking, way ahead of their time!

That was the first day I really ever met them though I'd seen Gary with The Newmatics suporting Talking Heads at De Montfort Halls in 1979. Oddly that was due to Factory Records act A Certain Ratio dropping out due to illness. Tony Wilson in Manchester thought of getting me to do it but, in pre mobile/email days remember he'd mislaid my phone number...but if he'd had it I'd have got the call to support Talking Heads instead of Birtles and Co...
